Developmental / Structural Editing
Developmental editing looks at the big picture. I can help you structure your ideas and shape your manuscript so that your argument flows. This is the first stage of editing and should be considered before sending to a publisher or review committee.
Line /Stylistic
Editing
Line editing addresses issues at the sentence level. I can help you improve word choice, write clear sentences, identify text to be cut, and smooth translations. This stage takes places after a developmental edit and before a copyedit.
Copyediting
Editing
Copyediting polishes your writing, paying attention to grammar, punctuation and mechanics. I can help ensure consistency, correct formatting and apply a style guide, such as APA, so that your work is ready to submit.
Proofreading
Editing
Proofreading fixes small errors like typos, common mispellings, and missing spaces between words. It is the last step in the editing process and is typically carried out after your work has been laid out ready for publishing.
What's the Difference between Copyediting and Proofreading?
Academic writers sometimes confuse copyediting and proofreading, and the words are often used interchangeably. Although both processes have some common elements, such as the correction of misspelling and imprecise grammar, there are some important differences that you should know before you engage an editor.
Copyediting aims to ensure the clarity of a text and helps to ready it to be sent to the publisher. When you receive your copyedited manuscript, you’ll see tracked changes and queries from the editor. Proofreading differs in that it is carried out after your manuscript has been sent to the publisher. Proofreaders will look for typos, but if a proofreader sees an awkward sentence, they will leave it alone.
